Wonsan (1993 pop. 300,148) is a port city and naval base in southeastern North Korea. It is the capital of Kangwon province.

Original name calls Wonsanjin. Opened as trade port in 1880. In 1914, Pyongyang-Wonsan railway, Shenyang-Wonsan railway was open, then gradually develops into eastern product distribution centre. Nowadays, Wonsan is a comprehensive harbor industrial city, it is the administrative centre of Kangwon Province too.

Kŭmgang-san is located near Wonsan.

Geography

Area is 269km2, located in Kangwon Province, near East Sea of Korea, west from the north to the south, towers Mountain Jangdok, Mountain Naphal, the flank sea level spreads Hwangtho Island, Ryo Island and so on more than 20 small islands, causes Wonsan to become the natural good port.

Transportation

Connect Pyongyang and other citys by electric railway and modern highway system . Wonsan has a military and civilian dual purposes air station(WON), is equipped with 01/19 and 15,/33 dual runways.

Education

It has Songdowon University, Kumgang University, Tonghae University, WonsanUniversity of Medicine, Wonsan First University of Education and Ri Su Dok University.


Tourism

Songdowon is the famous sea bathing place, water quality is clear, everywhere has pine, it is a national sightseeing point. Songdowon International Children ' s Union Camp was built beside Songdowon, it receives teenagers and youth for cultural interflow from various countries. Famous scenic site: Myongsasimni, Lake Sijung, Chongsokjon, Mountain Kumgang.

Industry

Wonsan has aquatic product processing factory, shipyard, chemistry enterprise and the cement factory.
