Thermoacoustics

Thermoacoustics is the use of sound waves to affect temperature and vice versa.

Practical uses involve rapid acoustical shocks to produce cooling, as might be employed in a refrigerator. Thermoacoustic condensors might someday replace ozone-depleting refrigerants in current refrigerators. Ben and Jerry's ice cream makers audited their refrigeration practices in 2001, and became alarmed of negative environmental impact. As a result, they are supporting the research of Dr. Steven Garrett and his research team at Pennsylvania State University.

It is also possible to create sound, and hence power from temperature gradients. Such a thermoacoustic Stirling engine using the proper working fluid and a linear alternator could produce electric power from heat without pistons or seals.
