Scoring

In puzzle games, scores are usually gained by solving the puzzles quickly. Higher scores can be gained by performing combos of puzzle solving. There is often a time bonus which can add extra points. The level number is often a multiplier on the points, so higher scores are possible on harder levels.

On ofther games, points are usually gained from defeating monsters and enemies. When defeating a boss a large amount of points is a common reward. Extra points can be gained from collecting power-ups, secret items, etc.

Scoring bugs

In many games, a good player can get the "Maximum score" due to a limitation or bug in the game. A typical limit would be 999,999 points. In some eight-bit systems and games, getting a score of 255 as the maximum was common.

Effects of the score

Usually, when a player gets a cetain amount of points, they may get an extra life or go on to a higher level. Points can be often used as currency which can redeemed for rewards and player upgrades.
