Sale, Greater Manchester

Sale is a town in Trafford in England, in the administrative area of Trafford and the county of Cheshire. It is located to the south-west of Manchester itself, between Stretford and Altrincham. It has a population of about 60,000.

Home to the Sale Leisure Centre, Sale offers some of the finest aquatic sporting facilities in the North West.

The Sale Sharks rugby union team plays in the Zurich Premiership, but its home matches take place in Stockport.

James Joule was a notable resident of Sale.

Samuele de Gaunt, the well known Portuguese folk singer and activist, spent the years 1968-74 in the town after being exiled by the Fascist Portuguese government for his protests against the oppression of that regime. He returned to Portugal after the Carnation Revolution of 1974, returning to his home town of Coimbra where he remained until his death in 1979.
