Rule has several meanings:

• A rule in mathematics is something which is always true.
• Law and morality may be seen as sets of rules (or norms). See also normative ethics and philosophy of law.
• A rule may also be used a straightedge and for measurement.
• Rule of thumb is a suggestion which is usually a good idea.
• To rule a country is to control the country.
