Vanuatu has been divided into six provinces since 1994:

1. Malampa
2. Penama
3. Sanma
4. Shefa
5. Tafea
6. Torba

From 1985 to 1994 it was divided into eleven island regions:

• Ambae and Maéwo (capital Longana )
• Ambrym (capital Eas )
• Banks and Torres (capital Sola )
• Éfaté (capital Port Vila)
• Épi (capital Ringdove )
• Malekula (capital Lakatoro)
• Paama (capital Liro )
• Pentecost (capital Loltong )
• Santo and Malo (capital Luganville)
• Shepherd (capital Morua )
• Taféa (capital Isangel )

From about 1968 until 1985, Vanuatu was divided into four areas:

• Efaté
• Malékoula
• Santo
• Tanna
