Peter Mogila

(Redirected from Peter Mogilas)

Peter Mogila (Ukrainian: Петро Могила, Petro Mohyla; Romanian: Petru Movilă; Russian: Pyotr Mogila; December 21 1596 – December 22, 1646) was a Metropolitan of Kiev and Galicia from 1633 until his death. He was a founder of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, one of the oldest and most distinguished academic and theological schools in Eastern Europe. Peter Mogila was an important political figure of his time and a profoundly influential theologian in the Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

Peter Mogila was born to a noble Moldavian family. His father, Simeon, was at times a ruler of Wallachia and Moldavia. His mother, Margareta, was a Hungarian princess.
