Mudug is a region (gobolka) in central Somalia. Its capital is Galcaio . It is bordered by Ethiopia, the Somalian regions of Nugaal and Galguduud and the Indian Ocean.
The region's main inhabitants belong to the Habargedir clan, part of the Hawiye clan family, and affiliated clans inhabiting the lower half bordering the region of Galgadud.
The population of Mudug Region is nearly 1.5 million, with 5% belonging to the Hawiye clan and 95% to the Darod clan. A great number of Mudug people live in other parts of Somalia and foreign countries.
Politically, socially and economically the region is integrated with Mogadishu and neighbouring Hawiye regions. It also shares ties with extended family members of the Darod clans living in the neighbouring Puntland region.
