Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is a regional municipality and the provincial capital of Nova Scotia, Canada. The 2001 population was 359,111, making it Canada's 13th most populous urban centre, although only the three former municipalities of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and adjacent areas of Halifax County which have experienced urban sprawl can be properly considered "urban".

In the early 1990s the provincial government sought to reduce the number of municipal governments in Halifax County and Cape Breton County and created a task force in 1992 to pursue this rationalization. In 1995, an Act to Incorporate the Halifax Regional Municipality received Royal Assent in the provincial legislature and the HRM was created on April 1, 1996.

The HRM constitutes the following now-amalgamated municipalities:

(2001 pop.)(1996 pop.)
City of Halifax119,292113,910
City of Dartmouth65,74165,629
Town of Bedford16,10213,638
Unincorporated portions of Halifax County157,976149,674
Total359,111342,851

Sable Island has historically been included in Halifax County and is also considered to be jurisdictionally part of HRM, despite being located 180 km offshore.

HRM's boundaries include all of Halifax County, Nova Scotia, except for several First Nation reserves.
