Usage of 'Europe' when applied to the EU is controversial as some euro-sceptics believe this usage to be part of an attempt by the pro-euro camp to merge Europe the continent and the EU in people's minds in order to further a political end.
• Continental Europe - that is, the mainland of Europe that excludes the British Isles and other European islands.
• Europa (mythology) - a mythical figure.
