Cochrane is a town in the Canadian province of Alberta at 51.19N - 114.48W intersected by Highway 1A and Highway 22 approx. 35 KM West of Calgary incorporated as a town in 1971 (previously a village). It is now part of the Greater Calgary Area which is the 5th largest metropolitan area in Canada (in 2004, the population was an estimated 1,037,100).
Cochrane was named after Senator Matthew Cochrane, a well known local rancher. The population in the 2004 Census was 12,418.
Cochrane has experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to the booming City of Calgary,
and is known for its incredible windsports located just northeast of the town centre.
Major industries are construction, retail, and agriculture (ranching). It's notable that the town has no business tax.
