Baron de Hirsch Cemetery

(Redirected from Baron de Hirsch cemetery)

The Baron de Hirsch Cemetery located on Windsor Street near Connaught Avenue is the only Jewish cemetery in the city of Halifax. Among the approximately 530 people buried there are ten victims of the RMS Titanic disaster originally thought to be Jewish. Eight of these were unidentified; the ninth was Saloon Steward Frederick William Wormald, and the tenth, Michel Navratil, was a Roman Catholic travelling with his two sons (who survived) and who had boarded the Titanic under the name "Louis M. Hoffman". He is the only non-Jew buried within the stone walls of the cemetery.

The property for the cemetery was purchased in 1893 by the Baron De Hirsch Hebrew Benevolent Society, named for the philanthropist, Baron Maurice de Hirsch (1831-1896), of Munich.
