Atlantica

Atlantica was an ancient continent. Atlantica formed about two billion years ago.

Partial (incomplete) history of Atlantica in chronological order

  • ~2 billion years ago: Atlantica formed.
  • ~1.8 billions years ago: Atlantica became part of the major supercontinent Columbia.
  • ~1.5 billion years ago: Columbia broke up; Atlantica became part of the minor supercontinent Nena, along with Baltica, Arctica, and the Eastern Antarctican Craton .
  • ~1.1 billion years ago: Nena (which contained Atlantica) became part of the major supercontinent Rodinia.
  • ~750 million years ago: Rodinia rifted apart. Atlantica, along with most of Nena except the Eastern Antarctican Craton, was part of the minor supercontinent Protolaurasia .
  • ~600 million years ago: Atlantica became part of the major supercontinent Pannotia.
  • ~Cambrian: the major supercontinent Pannotia disintegrated, leaving Atlantica in the minor supercontinent Gondwana.
  • ~Permian: Gondwana, which contained Atlantica, became part of the major supercontinent Pangaea.
  • ~Jurassic: Gondwana separated from Pangaea, carrying Atlantica with it.
  • ~Cretaceous: Gondwana fragmented, splitting Atlantica between the modern continents of Africa and South America.
