Atfalati (Atfalati). A division of the Kalapooian family whose earliest roots, were the hills around Forest Grove, Oregon and the shores and vicinity of Wappato lake. The trib may have inhabited land as far east as the site of current Portland, Oregon.
After their removal to the Grande Ronde Reservation tribal numbers have dwindled to about 20. Little is known of the Atfalati native customs. Their language was studied by Albert Samuel Gatschet, and most of our knowledge of the Kalapooian tongue is from the Atfalati dialect.
