Applix Word is a proprietary word processor that has been available for Linux since 1996. Part of the Applixware site, Applix Word is a full featured word processor.
The Applix suite was originally sold by RedHat for $500. This price was reduced to $200 in October of 1996, and, by 2000, just the Applix Word word processor was available for $50.
While not the first graphical word processor for Linux (EZ Word, part of the Andrew User Interface System, has that honor), nor the first proprietary word processor for Linux (Word Perfect was first made available for Linux by Caldera in late 1995), Applix Word was a good deal more user-friendly than EZ Word and a good deal more bug-free than early Linux releases of Word Perfect.
This program waned in popularity among Linux users when full-featured open-source word processors, such as Open Office and AbiWord, became available.
Applix Word, now owned by VistaSource, is still available for Linux. A new version of Applix, Applixware Office 4.4.3, was released on June 8, 2004.
