"Hi, I'm New Here"

"Hi, I'm New Here" is a popular form of trolling on the Harmony Central - Guitar Jam discussion boards. Established members will adopt new screen names and post a discussion thread with this title. See, e.g., [1]; [2]; and [3]. Generally, the troll produces one of two effects. First, other relatively new members will welcome the parent to the forum, neglecting to notice the already veteran post count. Or second, other veteran forum members will quickly identify the parent either by his post count, an inside joke in his troll, or through the content of his signature. When other posters call out the parent by his true identity, newbie froum members are confused and will generally post a variety of comments indicating as such. Regardless of the effect, the point of the troll is to amuse established forum members and to baffle newbies.

"Hi, I'm new here" also seems to be a regular way of introducing one's self to an internet forum; a quick Google search reveals about 42,200 hits for "Hi, I'm New Here". See [4].

The seemingly regular nature of the thread title makes it such an effective troll.
